VoIP entails breaking down the sounds your voice makes into tiny data packets and then moving them over the internet and having them reassembled at the other end so that it comes through as coherent speech.

The problems included guaranteeing latency (enough bandwidth to pass the data quickly enough for it to be reassembled in order) and also having someone at the other end with the right equipment to reassemble the data packets.

These challenges have now been addressed! This means that we can take your voice traffic over your broadband, have it filtered into an offsite telephone system and then distributed out to whoever you are calling, providing the same call quality expected from traditional telephony.
